As of the end of 2023, China had a total of 2.92 million corporate enterprises operating in the core sectors of the digital economy, employing 36.16 million individuals, according to the fifth national economic census released on Thursday.

The annual business revenue generated by these industries reached 48.45 trillion yuan, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics on its website.

The core industries of the digital economy encompass economic activities that provide digital technologies, products, services, infrastructure, and solutions vital for the digital advancement of various sectors, along with those that are entirely reliant on digital technologies and data elements.

Among these corporate entities, 262,000 focused on manufacturing digital products, 274,000 were involved in digital product services, 1.43 million operated within the digital technology application sector, and 950,000 belonged to industries propelled by digital factors.

During this period, digital technology application firms employed a total of 14.61 million individuals, representing the highest share of total employment in the core industries of the digital economy for 2023. This was followed by 13.37 million employed in digital products manufacturing, 6.66 million in digital-driven industries, and 1.52 million within digital product service companies.

In terms of revenue, digital product manufacturing enterprises reported the highest figures for 2023 at 20.48 trillion yuan. Digital technology application firms generated 14.04 trillion yuan, while industries driven by digital factors brought in 9.74 trillion yuan, and the digital product services sector accounted for 4.18 trillion yuan.
