During a press event in Rome on Thursday, Meloni was asked about Musk’s role in global politics. “Is the problem that he is rich and influential, or that he’s not left-wing?” Meloni responded, asserting that Musk does not pose a “danger to democracy.” She emphasized that election interference occurs when “wealthy people use resources to finance parties and associations around the world to influence policies, as in the case of George Soros.”
Meloni also indicated that Italy is in talks with several private firms, including Elon Musk’s SpaceX, regarding the security of the nation’s telecommunications system. However, she denied having engaged in private discussions with Musk on the issue. “I never talked about this with Musk. It’s not my habit to use my public role to do favors to friends,” she stated.
The connection between the right-leaning Italian politician and Musk has attracted considerable media attention. Meloni has defended her relationship with Musk, assuring Italian lawmakers that she would remain independent in matters where he has business interests.
As Musk prepares to join the team of the US president-elect, he has been selected by Trump, along with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, to head an unofficial 'Department of Government Efficiency'. Recently, Musk has sharpened his criticisms of European leaders, particularly those in Germany and the UK.
Additionally, Musk has taken jabs at Soros, likening him to the primary antagonist in the Star Wars franchise. This remark followed President Joe Biden’s decision to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the influential financier. Through his Open Society Foundations, Soros has sought to impact political processes in various countries globally, with his activities being banned in several locations, including Russia, Pakistan, and the Philippines.
