US bomb detonates at airport in Japan
An unexploded US bomb detonated at Miyazaki Airport in southwestern Japan on Wednesday, creating a significant crater on the taxiway and disrupting operations at the airport.

The blast occurred early in the morning when the coastal airport was relatively quiet. Fortunately, there were no planes passing over the location of the munition at the time.

Surveillance footage shared online captures the explosion, which sent a towering column of dirt and smoke into the air. The nature of the blast indicates that the ordnance had been buried deep underground.

The explosion left a sizable crater on one of the taxiways, leading to the closure of the facility and grounding over 70 flights as a result.

According to local media, Japanese Self-Defense Forces and police believe the explosion was caused by a buried 500-pound US bomb from World War II, and authorities are investigating the reasons behind the unexpected detonation.

Originally built as a military airfield in 1943 at an Imperial Japanese Navy base, Miyazaki Airport served as a significant staging area for notorious kamikaze pilots, with nearly 50 suicide missions launched from the site. The airport is anticipated to resume operations on Thursday after the damage is repaired and the crater is filled.
