Starmer Set to Declare Globalization Over – Times
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to give a speech on Monday, during which he will recognize that the period of globalization has concluded, as reported by The Times. The speech comes in light of recent actions by US President Donald...

The speech comes in light of recent actions by US President Donald Trump, who implemented significant tariffs on a wide range of America's trading partners, including the UK, earlier this week.
According to the article published on Sunday, Starmer is expected to express that tariffs are “wrong,” while also acknowledging his understanding of Trump’s “economic nationalism” and the reasons behind the support it receives from voters who feel they have not benefited from free trade and mass immigration.
In his address, Starmer will emphasize the need for the UK government to “move further and faster” to enhance domestic economic growth in response to the US tariffs on imports.
An anonymous official from Downing Street conveyed to The Times that “the world has changed, globalization is over and we are now in a new era.”
The official added, “We have got to demonstrate that our approach, a more active Labour government, a more reformist government, can provide the answers for people in every part of this country.”
In an article for The Telegram published the previous day, Starmer remarked that “the world as we knew it has gone” due to Trump’s tariffs. He noted, “First it was defense and national security. Now it is the global economy and trade. Old assumptions can no longer be taken for granted,” and indicated that the British government would soon “turbocharge plans that will improve our domestic competitiveness, so we’re less exposed to these kinds of global shocks.”
On Saturday, Starmer engaged in a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, during which they both agreed that “a trade war was in nobody’s interests, but nothing should be off the table,” according to a readout from the UK government. Notably, the British PM does not intend to reach out to Trump regarding the tariffs.
On the same day, President Trump urged Americans to “hang tough” as they brace for the international community's response to his economic policies. He stated, “It won’t be easy, but the end result will be historic,” asserting that the tariffs represent “an economic revolution, and we will win… we will make America great again.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin has frequently commented on the conclusion of the globalization era since the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991. In late 2023, he observed that “it is obvious that the globalization model, which was formed to a large extent by Western states – naturally, in their own interests – has outlived its usefulness and is in deep crisis. A new, more just and democratic system of international relations is being formed, which meets the needs of the global majority.”
