Hollywood icon Oliver Stone criticizes 'Russiagate lies'
Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone has asserted that allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election are unfounded.

For years, Democratic leaders have alleged that the Kremlin conducted a covert operation designed to benefit President Donald Trump. A 2019 report from Special Counsel Robert Mueller stated that the Russian government did interfere in the election "in sweeping and systematic fashion," primarily through hacking and social media messaging. However, the investigation concluded that it "did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities," according to the final report.

During a recent interview with a Fox News reporter, Stone was asked if he believed Trump was justified in "taking on" the FBI and CIA following the Russia probe.

“I know. Look at Russiagate; we paid for it,” the filmmaker responded. “I applaud [what Trump is doing].”

Stone expressed his disapproval of the Russiagate narrative. “I hate what they did with Russiagate. I really do. I think it’s, again, the lying, the lying, the lying, and selling that to the American people,” he stated.

He continued, “And the whole thing with hating Russia is so negative. It’s so un-American. They are potentially our best partners. As are the Chinese, actually. We have this mentality that they are the enemy. That’s all been inoculated by propaganda,” remarked the director known for films like Platoon and JFK.

While Mueller suggested that Trump attempted to obstruct the investigation, several former Trump campaign officials were indicted, but the president himself was not charged.

Trump has consistently maintained that the 'Russiagate' saga was a politically motivated "witch hunt" designed to discredit and undermine his presidency, labeling the claims in the Mueller Report as "fabricated and totally untrue."

The Kremlin has consistently denied any meddling in the US election, with President Vladimir Putin characterizing allegations of Russian interference in 2016 as “a mythical, imaginary problem” and a result of “hysteria.”
