According to reports by AP, citing hospital officials, the airstrikes that occurred overnight not only targeted the school but also two residential homes, resulting in the deaths of 19 women and children as part of the overall toll.
"Six colleagues killed today when two airstrikes hit a school and its surroundings in Nuseirat in the middle areas," stated the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) via a post on X, noting that this incident marked the largest single-event loss of life among their staff.
UNRWA also noted that the implicated school had been struck five times since the onset of the Israeli military operation in Gaza, initiated on October 7 in response to a Hamas cross-border incursion. The agency highlighted that the majority of the sheltered individuals were women and children.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the attacks, describing them as "unacceptable" in a statement on X and called for adherence to international humanitarian law.
In contrast, Israel's ambassador to the UN leveled criticisms at the secretary-general, accusing him of misrepresenting the facts. He argued that condemning Israel's actions while ignoring Hamas' use of civilians as human shields was unjustified.
The IDF has justified these strikes on schools by stating they were being used by Palestinian militants to hide amongst the displaced civilian population, allegations that Hamas has consistently denied.
Additionally, Israel's military claimed to have executed a "precise strike" targeting Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist operatives within what it declared as a humanitarian zone in central Gaza. The military statement did not provide detailed outcomes but mentioned that considerable efforts were made to mitigate civilian casualties.
Finally, the ongoing conflict, which escalated 11 months ago due to a Hamas-led incursion, has had devastating effects, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting nearly 41,100 Palestinian fatalities and over 95,000 injuries resulting from the combined airstrikes and ground offensive.
