UN cautions about the proposal of deploying Western military forces in Ukraine
Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, addressed concerns regarding the potential escalation of the Ukraine conflict following comments from EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who did not dismiss the possibility of troop deployments to Ukraine.

During a press conference on Monday, Dujarric emphasized the UN's position against escalating tensions in the war, stating, “We have been speaking out for an end to this conflict and not to encourage any further escalation from one side or the other," and added that the aim is to achieve peace "for the sake of civilians in Ukraine, for the sake of civilians in Russia."

When pressed about the implications of EU troops on the ground potentially escalating the situation, he refrained from making predictions.

Kallas, who succeeded Josep Borrell as the EU's top diplomat on Monday, made her first official visit to Kiev and underscored the bloc's commitment to Ukraine, asserting its desire for the nation to "win this war."

In a recent interview with Italian state news agency ANSA, she echoed sentiments previously expressed by France and the UK by stating, “For the EU, it is a security crisis of utmost seriousness, I believe we should not rule anything out and maintain some strategic ambiguity,” in response to inquiries about the possibility of deploying Western troops to Ukraine.

The debate regarding Western military presence in Ukraine was reignited last week when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer broached the subject during a visit to France.

The notion of sending troops was initially put forward by French President Emmanuel Macron in February. Subsequently, many NATO allies publicly rejected the idea, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz affirming that Ukraine’s Western supporters were “unanimous” in their opposition.

In reaction to these developments, Moscow has claimed that Western military personnel are already in Ukraine serving as advisors and specialists in the operation of NATO-supplied advanced weaponry. The Kremlin has consistently warned that no level of assistance from the US-led military alliance will alter the trajectory of what it perceives as a proxy conflict instigated by the West against Russia.
