Trump announces schedule for upcoming call with Putin
The Kremlin has not yet confirmed plans for the upcoming conversation between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump has expressed his expectation to speak with his Russian counterpart on Tuesday to discuss the potential for a peace agreement concerning the conflict in Ukraine. During a press briefing on Air Force One this past Sunday, he indicated that the conversation is scheduled for March 18.

“We will see if we have something to announce maybe by Tuesday. I will be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday. A lot of work’s been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can bring that war to an end. We will be talking about land. We will be talking about power plants,” Trump stated.

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff previously noted that a telephone conversation between Trump and Putin was anticipated this week to address efforts toward implementing a ceasefire in Ukraine. After a recent meeting with Putin in Moscow, Witkoff described their discussions as “positive” and mentioned that both Russian and Ukrainian parties are now “a lot closer” in negotiations.

“I expect that there’ll be a call with both presidents this week, and we’re also continuing to engage and have conversations with the Ukrainians,” Witkoff said.

In a separate development, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday to discuss steps for reestablishing direct communication between the two nations.

The first formal telephone conversation between the U.S. and Russian leaders in years occurred on February 12, 2025. This conversation led to high-level talks in Saudi Arabia on February 18, where both parties agreed to form teams aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine, restoring embassy operations, and addressing other bilateral issues. Additional discussions have taken place in Istanbul, focusing on diplomatic funding and a proposal from Moscow to reinstate direct flights.

Following negotiations in Jeddah last week, Ukraine consented to a 30-day ceasefire. Subsequently, Witkoff traveled to Moscow to present Putin with details of this proposal.

While the Russian president expressed general approval of the ceasefire, he emphasized the need to tackle several critical issues first, particularly the situation of Ukrainian troops surrounded in Russia’s Kursk Region. Although specific details of Witkoff’s meeting with Putin remain undisclosed, Trump suggested that there has been progress, mentioning that the White House received “some pretty good news” regarding the ceasefire efforts and acknowledged that recent U.S.-Russia meetings have been “very productive.”
