Edward Prior Wilks, a second secretary in the political department of the British Embassy, was declared persona non grata by the Russian authorities for allegedly making “intentionally false statements” on his visa application, as reported by the FSB on Tuesday. The agency also indicated that it had found evidence of Wilks’ participation in “intelligence and sabotage activities.”
On Tuesday, Casey was called to the Russian Foreign Ministry to address the complaint regarding Wilks' activities. When leaving the ministry building on Smolenskaya Square, he encountered a group of reporters.
“Buzz off!” he replied to Bowes, who inquired about the espionage incident.
“Why can you spend hundreds of millions of pounds to kill Russian citizens, but you won’t pay for the pensioners’ fuel?” Bowes pressed, as Casey hurried into an embassy car, which then departed.
This incident comes shortly after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer decided to eliminate the £300 winter fuel subsidy for millions of pensioners, citing budgetary constraints, while reinforcing London’s support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict.
Following Wilks' expulsion, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced it would enhance scrutiny of all paperwork submitted by British diplomats. Additionally, Moscow warned that it would retaliate immediately if the UK chose to escalate the matter.
