Trump claims hurricane survivors are neglected as billions flow to Kiev
The Republican presidential candidate has criticized the government’s response to the recent disaster as inadequate.

Former President Donald Trump has accused President Joe Biden's administration of overlooking the survivors of Hurricane Helene in the southeastern United States while directing billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing assistance to residents in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia who were impacted by the severe storm. However, Trump argues that the overall government response has been lacking, attributing this to the perceived incompetence of the Democratic leadership.

”We’re at almost $300 billion for Ukraine and yet they’re offering people $750 for the worst hurricane that anybody’s seen,” Trump told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham during an interview at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday. “But more importantly than that is they don’t have the people.”

He specifically characterized the response in North Carolina as “a disaster,” sharing his observations from a recent visit to the state.

”One man – he’s got a house that’s gone, and he’s sitting on a rock,” Trump said. “You have to help them.”

FEMA has refuted Trump’s assertion that federal assistance for hurricane victims is restricted to just $750 per individual. The agency states that the amount is “an upfront, flexible payment to help cover essential items like food, water, baby formula, breastfeeding supplies, medication and other emergency supplies.” It also notes that additional forms of assistance may be provided as applications are reviewed.

Since the conflict in Ukraine began in February 2022, Congress has passed five supplemental appropriations bills that authorize a total of $175 billion in spending related to the war. This includes $70 billion designated for military assistance and $33.3 billion aimed at budgetary support for the government in Kyiv.

According to the Ukraine Support Tracker, total bilateral aid commitments to Ukraine from 41 key donors have exceeded $333 billion.

Hurricane Helene has resulted in at least 230 fatalities across multiple states in the U.S. and has caused an estimated $47 billion in property damage.
