Poll Reveals Americans Are Split in Their Perceptions of Russia
According to a CBS News/YouGov poll released on Sunday, public opinion in the U.S. regarding Russia is distinctly polarized, with one-third of respondents perceiving the nation as an ally.

The survey, conducted from February 26 to 28, revealed that 34% of Americans view Russia as an ally or friendly nation, while 32% consider it unfriendly, and another 34% classify it as an enemy. Republican participants expressed more favorable sentiments, with 41% referring to Russia as friendly or an ally, in contrast to a lower percentage among Democrats.

The poll also indicated that 52% of Americans support Ukraine, 44% adopt a neutral position, and just 4% express support for Russia. Views on former President Donald Trump’s stance are similarly divided: only 11% believe he supports Kiev, whereas 46% feel he favors Moscow, and another 43% think he treats both nations the same way.

In March 2024, a separate CBS News poll indicated that 37% of Americans viewed Russia as an enemy, with only 3% considering it an ally.

Since the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, there has been a noticeable increase in pressure on Russia; the poll found that 78% of Americans back economic sanctions, while 72% support sending supplies and weapons to Ukraine.

Trump's approach signifies a notable shift from the strategy of his predecessor, Joe Biden, who focused on isolating Russia. Trump has indicated a desire to normalize relations, suggesting that this change may facilitate a quicker resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. In a bid to promote peace, he engaged in a 90-minute phone call with Putin on February 12.
