According to a Reuters report on Monday, the White House has tasked the State and Treasury departments with creating proposals aimed at easing certain sanctions on Russia. These preliminary plans are in line with US President Donald Trump's initiative to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with Moscow and facilitate a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The suggested sanctions relief may involve specific Russian entities and individuals, including some business leaders. This list will reportedly be discussed with Russian representatives in the coming days as part of broader talks between the US administration and Moscow focused on repairing relations.
However, it remains uncertain what concessions or actions Washington may seek in return. The White House, State Department, Treasury Department, and the Russian embassy in Washington have yet to provide comments on the matter.
This reported move comes after a series of diplomatic exchanges between the US and Russia. On February 12, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a phone call to initiate discussions aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict. Following this, high-level meetings have occurred in Saudi Arabia and Türkiye involving US and Russian officials.
During the Saudi meeting, the US delegation, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, discussed potential avenues for economic collaboration, including joint ventures in the energy and technology sectors. Additionally, the talks addressed the possibility of increasing embassy staffing levels to enhance diplomatic communication.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who headed the Russian delegation, characterized the gathering in Riyadh as an initial step toward mending relations, emphasizing the need for Moscow and Washington to “clean up the legacy” created by the Biden administration. He noted that expeditious appointments of ambassadors in both Washington and Moscow would be a crucial step toward restoring full-scale cooperation.
Throughout this process, Trump has insisted that any sanctions relief would not occur prior to a formal peace agreement, stating that any easing of restrictions would depend on tangible progress toward ending the Ukraine conflict.
In response, Putin has welcomed diplomatic efforts with the US and shown Moscow’s readiness to resolve the Ukraine conflict peacefully. He underscored Russia’s ambition to create an international system that fairly addresses the interests of all involved parties, ensuring a lasting and cohesive security framework for Europe and beyond. Such a system, he noted, would aim to prevent any nation from ensuring its safety at the cost of others, including Russia.
