Translation Industry and Global Cultural Exchange to be Transformed by AI Tools
The discussion around the possible replacement of human translators by artificial intelligence has generated considerable debate within the translation industry. As AI technologies continue to evolve, the sector is increasingly moving towards...

During the annual conference of the Translators Association of China, Du Zhanyuan, president of TAC and head of China International Communications Group, emphasized the necessity for the industry to embrace innovations led by AI.
"Translation is among the fields where AI applications currently excel," he noted. "Leveraging new technologies can reshape workflows and elevate productivity, unlocking unprecedented potential for the profession."
Reflecting a similar perspective, Alison Rodriguez, president of the International Federation of Translators, highlighted the critical role of human oversight in her video address.
"Art, literature, social customs and traditions are as important for the future as the algorithms, deep learning and large language models will be, because both are the future," she stated. She added that translators, interpreters, and terminologists play a vital role in ensuring that AI-generated content adheres to ethical standards and retains credibility.
The translation industry in China is thriving, largely driven by advancements in technology. A report shared at the conference indicated that by late 2024, the translation workforce in the country had exceeded 6.8 million, propelled by a growing demand for multilingual services.
Beyond traditional language support, translation companies are now offering specialized services such as international communication strategies and cross-cultural marketing.
In response to the changing market landscape, universities are revising their curricula to emphasize specialized areas like industrial engineering, life sciences, and AI-focused technical translation.
Simultaneously, the globalization of Chinese culture, driven by the increasing popularity of Chinese films, video games, and other creative endeavors, has heightened the importance of translation as a means of fostering cross-cultural understanding.
To address these developments, the TAC has initiated the "Four Translation Projects," a comprehensive program that includes expert networks, cultural outreach initiatives, research hubs, and training programs. Additionally, the association has collaborated with technology companies to create AI translation R&D centers, promoting cooperation between human expertise and advanced technology.
