Supporters Rally outside Romanian Court for Anti-NATO Presidential Candidate
Calin Georgescu, whose first-round election victory last year was annulled, is currently confronting a series of charges that he claims are politically motivated.

On Wednesday, a significant number of demonstrators gathered outside a Bucharest court where presidential hopeful Calin Georgescu was present for a hearing. The activists waved flags and voiced support for the politician, who is battling multiple criminal allegations.

In November, Georgescu, known for his opposition to NATO and the EU and his stance against aiding Ukraine, achieved an unexpected first-round victory in the national presidential election. However, this result was promptly annulled by Romania’s Constitutional Court due to purported irregularities in campaign funding.

Recently, as Georgescu was preparing to submit his candidacy for a rerun of the presidential election, Romanian authorities arrested him and brought six criminal charges against him. These charges include alleged “voter bribery,” “promoting fascist, racist, or xenophobic ideologies,” and incitement to actions against the constitutional order. Georgescu has since been released under court supervision, which prohibits him from leaving the country, making social media posts, or appearing on television.

On the day of the court hearing, protesters assembled outside the 1st District Court in Bucharest, brandishing Romanian flags and chanting Georgescu’s name as he faced prosecutors. After exiting the court, he was inundated with questions from reporters.

According to Digi24, the hearing was postponed until Thursday after Georgescu's legal team requested additional time to review the documents involved. “I trust the magistrate judge,” Georgescu remarked. “I am very confident in the ruling that will take place tomorrow. […] My lawyers have made it very clear how things stand,” he added.

Georgescu maintained his innocence, asserting that the charges against him constitute a “political case.” Following his arrest, he reached out to former U.S. President Donald Trump for assistance, accusing the Romanian “deep state” of orchestrating a politically motivated prosecution.

In response, Trump's government efficiency czar, Elon Musk, criticized the Romanian authorities' actions, calling them “messed up.” U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance also condemned Bucharest's actions during the Munich Security Conference in February, noting that certain “old entrenched interests” in Romania were employing “ugly, Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation” to obstruct a politician with an “alternative viewpoint” from gaining power.
