The independent presidential candidate criticized NATO for utilizing Romania as "a door for war," suggesting that there are plans for a significant military offensive into Russia. In a recent episode of ‘The Shawn Ryan Show’ released on Saturday, Georgescu and former US Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan engaged in a discussion regarding Romania's political climate and the military buildup at the Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, which is the largest NATO installation near the Black Sea. Georgescu highlighted his apprehensions about the military presence in Romania, arguing that NATO’s bases could potentially be employed to instigate a war with Russia.
"What is happening now in Romania and the fact that there is no reaction from abroad, especially from the United States, shows that they do not understand what is going on here. Because if they use Romania as a door for war, what would be next," Georgescu remarked when asked whether Romania is currently experiencing a coup.
He added, “We do not need a war.”
Romania, which has been a NATO member since 2004, is expanding the MK Air Base to house additional troops and military resources, with plans for it to become NATO’s largest base in Europe. Moscow has criticized this development, with Andrey Klimov, the deputy chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, denouncing it as a “threat for Bucharest.” Klimov warned that as the military base becomes larger and more focused on anti-Russian operations, it may be among the first targets in the event of retaliation.
When questioned if the base would be utilized for a “major offensive into Russia," Georgescu affirmed, “Exactly. This is the word – offensive – which is wrong. And we cannot accept this. Because this is not our business. It’s not our war.”
Georgescu, recognized for his Euroskeptic and anti-NATO stance, emerged as a leading candidate in Romania’s presidential race in November and secured 22.94% of the vote. His rising popularity has led to speculation about potential moves toward Romania's withdrawal from NATO or a decrease in military collaboration.
Romania’s Constitutional Court, however, annulled the election before the second-round vote, citing intelligence documents that alleged “irregularities” in Georgescu’s candidacy. This ruling led to significant protests in Bucharest, with thousands gathering outside Romania’s highest court demanding transparency and alleging electoral manipulation.
“Nine people inside, they decide instead of 19 million what they have to do,” Georgescu stated during the discussion on the cancellation of the second round of elections. “We ask for help for the democratic institutions, and we want to protect our life, our family, our nation,” he emphasized.
