In an unfortunate event in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, at least 35 individuals have lost their lives, and dozens more have sustained injuries after a car drove into a large crowd of pedestrians, according to police reports. Authorities confirmed on Tuesday that over 40 people were wounded in the incident that occurred on Monday evening.

Officials stated that a vehicle had “hit multiple pedestrians and then fled the scene” near the Zhuhai Sports Center. The driver, a 62-year-old man, was later apprehended and is now in custody. The motives behind his actions remain unclear.

Local media reported that among the injured pedestrians were both senior citizens and children. Surviving victims were transported to four area hospitals, with one facility admitting over 20 patients.

A Beijing-based outlet, Caixin, revealed that an SUV struck members of various fitness walking groups at the outdoor track of the sports center.

Video footage from the scene depicted numerous injured individuals, many dressed in sports attire, lying on the tracks. Witnesses can be heard shouting “terrorist!” as emergency personnel placed victims into vehicles, according to verified reports from Reuters.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Zhuhai Sports Center announced it would close indefinitely. The incident occurred just one day before the kickoff of the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition 2024, the largest event of its kind in the country, set to take place in Zhuhai from November 12 to 17.
