The Syrian Army command has announced that President Bashar Assad’s 24-year rule is over, according to a Syrian officer speaking to Reuters. This declaration comes in the wake of a rapid advance by jihadist forces within the capital.
The jihadists proclaim that Damascus is “now free of Assad” and are anticipated to make their first public address through state television, as reported by Reuters, citing two anti-government sources.
In light of the political upheaval, Prime Minister Mohammad al-Jalali has expressed his willingness to “cooperate with any leadership chosen by the people,” according to Al Jazeera. He noted that he remains at home and is inclined to uphold the continuity of government.
Ahmed Al-Sharaa, a leading commander for the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has issued directives forbidding all militant forces in Damascus from approaching public institutions or discharging weapons into the air. He further stated that government institutions will be overseen by the “former prime minister” until their official transfer to the new authorities.
Over the weekend, HTS fighters and other anti-government militias entered Damascus, effectively taking over the capital. Flight tracking websites indicate that Assad’s plane has departed the city.
