Star Wars introduces its first transgender Stormtrooper
A recently released Star Wars book exploring the history of the Clone Troopers introduces the franchise's first transgender character, provoking a wave of criticism. Read Full Article at RT.com.
The character, named Sister, is a Stormtrooper who was first mentioned in the 2022 book “Queen’s Hope,” where she was depicted serving the Galactic Republic alongside iconic characters Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Clone Wars.
In a new publication titled ‘Star Wars: The Secrets of the Clone Troopers,’ Sister has been formally integrated into the franchise's canon, portrayed as a soldier with dreadlocks and armor colored in the blue and pink hues of the transgender flag.
“When one of our kind expressed her gender identity differently than her fellow troopers, she feared she’d have to hide who she truly was inside. Fortunately, her brothers in the 7th Sky Corps gave her the name Sister as a constant reminder that she belonged,” an excerpt from the new book states.
The character has become a topic of ridicule online since her introduction. Critics highlighted that Sister’s creation, initially conceptualized in 2022, is now part of an illustrated encyclopedia for children. As a clone trooper, Sister is portrayed as an intergalactic soldier, but some social media commentators find the premise amusing.
In the Star Wars universe, Clone Troopers are genetically-engineered soldiers based on the bounty hunter Jango Fett, designed to age at twice the rate of normal humans and bred for obedience.
The decision to incorporate a transgender Clone Trooper has been met with scorn from parts of the fanbase, with some deriding it as “moronic” and an example of “utterly insane gender cult worship.”
“This can’t be real. Gotta be a parody… there is no freaking way,” one user expressed on X, while another suggested that such moves are detrimental to “escapism and fantasy.”
“Is anyone else wondering just how bad it can get? We keep hitting levels where I say ‘Surely this is the lowest they’ll let Star Wars go’ and they blow right past it the next day like it’s nothing,” another fan commented.
Conversely, a segment of the audience has shown support for the inclusion of Sister, praising Disney for promoting “inclusivity and telling transphobes to f*** off.”
“I love this! More diversity in the clones and representation through each of them trying to make their existence more than just being a killing machine for the republic,” wrote one fan.
