The estranged husband of Tatyana Bakalchuk, the primary owner and CEO of Wildberries, Russia’s leading e-commerce company, was taken into custody on Thursday. This occurred following a shooting incident outside the company’s headquarters in Moscow that resulted in two fatalities.
Bakalchuk, who possesses a 1% stake in the multibillion-dollar enterprise, has been accused by his wife of orchestrating a violent assault on the firm's main office on Wednesday. The Russian Investigative Committee is currently looking into the shooting that left two dead and injured five others, including police officers.
Reports of Bakalchuk’s detention came from RIA Novosti, citing a law enforcement source. Earlier on Thursday, a message from his Telegram account indicated that he had been charged with several serious crimes, including murder and attempted murder. This aligns with the allegations detailed in the Investigative Committee's statement regarding the incident. The message was released on behalf of Mr. Bakalchuk’s lawyers, who insisted that their client had been set up.
"We are certain that after studying materials provided to the investigation and video records, [Mr. Bakalchuk] will be released," the message asserted.
Tatyana and Vladislav Bakalchuk co-founded Wildberries in 2004. In July, they announced their decision to divorce, which has sparked a contentious property dispute. The company is planning a merger with advertising giant Russ, a move opposed by Mr. Bakalchuk.
According to Tatyana Bakalchuk, her husband led a group of men in an attempted "raid" on Wildberries headquarters, disguising their actions as business negotiations. She stated the two casualties were company security personnel.
Prior to the merger, Forbes had estimated that Tatyana Bakalchuk’s personal net worth stood at $7.9 billion, making her the richest woman and the 22nd richest person in Russia. She holds a 99% ownership of Wildberries.
