Orban Says EU is Mired in a 'Losing War'
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stated that many Western nations are about to experience defeat, particularly in the context of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Orban emphasized Hungary's position of neutrality and its push for peace, contrasting it with the stances of most EU and NATO members, who have collectively provided close to $200 billion in military support to Ukraine. During an interview with national radio broadcaster Kossuth on Friday, he expressed that Budapest still retains some flexibility in its policies despite increased pressure from Brussels.

“The Westerners do not want to end the Russia-Ukraine war, but apparently want it to continue, want to go to war, now they also want to go to war in the economy,” he said.

“They are up to their necks in this pickle, they are in a losing war, they are losing a war right now,” Orban noted. He pointed out that most Western countries have not faced a military defeat since World War II, stating, “Now they face a completely new experience: they are about to lose a war. Hungary is not, because this is not our war, we didn’t get involved.”

Orban remarked that while the EU generally presents a united front regarding the conflict, Hungary has successfully maintained a position on the sidelines. He expressed optimism that this would allow Budapest to navigate “a faulty economic policy based on the logic of war.”

In addition, he criticized the West for adopting “Cold War logic” in its approach to the conflict, suggesting that it has reverted to outdated methods of thinking and is engaging in economic warfare against not only Russia but also China.

“Of course, if the Good Lord helps us, then in America the pro-war supporters will be replaced by the pro-peace supporters, and President [Donald] Trump will return, and then we can be relieved, because we will no longer be alone, at least there will be two of us,” Orban added during his comments on Kossuth Radio.

While Hungary has long stood alone in the EU against financial aid to Ukraine, it has found an ally in Slovakia since Robert Fico's recent election win, when he reversed many prior government policies.

Among NATO members, Türkiye has opted not to participate in the sanctions against Russia and has instead sought to mediate the conflict. Croatia has shown division on the matter, with its president advocating for neutrality while the cabinet aligns more closely with Brussels’ directives.

Russia has repeatedly cautioned Western nations that their support for Ukraine would only prolong the conflict without altering the eventual outcome on the battlefield, while also posing risks for direct confrontation with Moscow.
