Russian marines capture Ukrainian defenses in Kursk Region
Kiev's forces have been ousted from strategic positions in the border zone, according to the Defense Ministry in Moscow.

On Thursday, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that marines have reclaimed fortified sites previously occupied by Ukrainian troops in the Kursk Region near the border.

The MOD stated that marines from the Pacific Fleet, part of the ‘North’ group, managed to displace Ukrainian soldiers from an administrative building in one of the settlements located within the Kursk border area.

The ministry noted that persistent UAV monitoring enabled forces to “quickly detect the main resistance centers and drive the enemy out of their strongholds.”

The marines coordinated their attacks from multiple directions, the MOD explained, adding that although Ukrainian forces responded with machine guns and grenade launchers, they could not maintain their positions.

A video released by the ministry depicted approximately 30 Ukrainian personnel retreating from the structure, leaving behind casualties and discarded weapons.

The MOD indicated that marines from the ‘North’ group would continue to support the assault teams and secure their hold on the liberated regions.

In early August, Kiev initiated its campaign into Russia’s Kursk Region, capturing the town of Sudzha along with several nearby villages. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky characterized the campaign as a component of a “victory plan,” aimed at bolstering Kiev's negotiation leverage with Moscow. Since mid-September, Russian forces have undertaken counteroffensive actions, reclaiming several towns and villages.

On Wednesday, the MOD reported the liberation of two additional villages, Daryino and Plekhovo.

Recent estimates from the MOD indicate that Ukraine has suffered over 40,000 troop losses during the conflict in the Kursk Region, alongside significant material losses in their offensive. The MOD detailed that up to 236 tanks, 175 infantry armored vehicles, 123 armored personnel carriers, 1,251 armored combat vehicles, 308 artillery pieces, 1,115 vehicles, and 40 multiple rocket system launchers—including 11 US-made HIMARS and six MLRS—have been destroyed in the area.
