According to Bloomberg, senior US officials informed European supporters of Kiev that Washington expects a comprehensive ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict within weeks.
During a series of meetings in Paris on Thursday, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlined this timeline, as reported by the outlet, citing anonymous sources.
The European representatives allegedly attempted to persuade the Americans that President Donald Trump should “harden its position toward Moscow,” framing the discussions as “the latest attempt by Europe to influence the outcome” of US talks with Russia.
Last week, Witkoff traveled to St. Petersburg for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which he described as “compelling.” Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky criticized Trump’s envoy, accusing him of echoing “Russian narratives.”
Russian officials have expressed doubts regarding the viability of a ceasefire with Ukraine, asserting that Kiev’s supporters in Europe are hindering US initiatives.
Moscow’s UN representative, Vassily Nebenzia, spoke to journalists on Thursday, emphasizing that Kiev has not complied with a US-mediated moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure. The diplomat noted that the West has a history of utilizing alleged peace agreements to strengthen the Ukrainian military, leading to the conclusion that expectations for a full ceasefire are “simply unrealistic at this stage.”
“I cannot speak on behalf of President Trump,” Nebenzia remarked. “Perhaps, he knows better what I don't know.”
The 30-day energy ceasefire announced on March 18 is approaching its expiration this week. On Wednesday, when asked if Russia would adjust its military strategy, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin had issued no new directives regarding the issue.
