"Hit List" of CEOs Prompts Warning from New York Police
Following the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, ‘wanted’ posters featuring corporate executives have emerged across Manhattan and online. The New York Police Department has issued warnings to U.S. healthcare executives about an increased risk to their safety.

The incident occurred when Thompson was shot outside a Hilton hotel in central Manhattan by an attacker who wore a mask and a hood. A 26-year-old suspect, Luigi Mangione, has been arrested in connection with the shooting and appeared in a Pennsylvania court on Tuesday, facing a charge of second-degree murder.

An NYPD bulletin obtained by ABC News highlighted that viral posts have circulated, naming other health insurance CEOs along with their salaries. The bulletin noted, “Both prior to and after the suspected perpetrator’s identification and arrest, some online users across social media platforms reacted positively to the killing, encouraged future targeting of similar executives, and shared conspiracy theories regarding the shooting.”

The ‘wanted’ posters plastered throughout Manhattan feature images of industry leaders, with text shaped like bullets that claims Thompson was killed due to medical claims his company denied. One of the posters stated, “UnitedHealthcare killed everyday people for the sake of profit. As a result, Brian Thompson was denied his claim to life. Who will be denied next?” Another poster declared, “Healthcare CEOs Should Not Feel Safe, Deny, Defend, Depose.”

According to reports, the NYPD suspects that Mangione may be viewed as a “martyr” by some, potentially inspiring future attacks. The bulletin emphasized that the shooter’s actions have the “capability to inspire a variety of extremists and grievance-driven malicious actors to violence.”

The police document also referenced social media users who rationalized Thompson's shooting. One post expressed frustration over denied medical treatment, saying, “My mom was denied chemo multiple times and suffered tremendously they missed her cancer for two years because she was constantly denied… she will have life-altering damage because of it. F*** him may he rest in piss.” Another comment on Reddit included in the report lamented corporate control, stating, “The politicians are compromised and the corporations are suffocating us - all CEO’s should be considered. Sucks when your government is bought by these CEO’s who immediately impact the masses.”

Timothy Gallagher, a former FBI agent and managing director of the global investigations firm Nardello and Co, remarked to the BBC on Thursday that, given the significant attention surrounding the suspect and the numerous individuals with grievances, “the threat of a copycat is real.”
