Russia discusses recent discussions with the US
Moscow has underscored that diplomatic normalization requires reciprocal efforts, following a meeting with a delegation from Washington.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, both Russia and the US have outlined steps to restore normal operations at their respective diplomatic missions after talks held in Türkiye.

The Russian and US delegations convened in Istanbul on Thursday, aiming to mend a diplomatic divide that widened under President Joe Biden's previous administration.

The primary focus of the discussions was on reinstating regular operations at the US Embassy in Moscow and the Russian Embassy in Washington. The two sides reportedly identified “concrete initial steps,” as mentioned earlier by the US State Department. In a statement released on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry highlighted that normalization must be a two-way process.

In recent years, both nations have implemented a range of restrictions against one another, such as limiting the number of diplomatic personnel, restricting banking access, and seizing diplomatic properties. Moscow maintains that its sanctions are a direct consequence of actions taken by Washington.

Leading the delegations were Aleksandr Darchiev, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s North Atlantic department, and Sonata Coulter, US deputy assistant secretary for Russia and Central Europe.

Darchiev is expected to be appointed as Moscow’s next ambassador to the US. The Russian Foreign Ministry indicated in a separate statement on Friday that he received US agreement for his appointment during the discussions on Thursday, and he is anticipated to travel to Washington soon.

The ministry also underscored the necessity of achieving “practical results for improving bilateral relations in the interests of our peoples.” As part of this initiative, Russia suggested reinstating direct air traffic between the two countries.

In 2022, the US suspended flights and closed its airspace to Russian airlines, aligning with other Western nations in response to the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. As a result, travelers have had to rely on airlines from neutral countries, using routes through places like Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates.

US President Donald Trump has moved away from many policies established during the Biden administration, including efforts to “isolate” Russia. His administration is advocating for a swift resolution to the Ukraine conflict.

Trump has characterized Kiev’s ambitions for NATO membership as unrealistic, while Moscow regards the military bloc’s expansion in Europe and its commitments regarding Ukraine as key factors exacerbating the ongoing conflict.
