In a speech at the White House on Thursday, Biden addressed the nation following the election, where Vice President Kamala Harris faced a significant defeat against Republican Donald Trump.
“We accept the choice the country made,” Biden remarked. “You can’t love your country only when you win.”
Biden also revealed that he had spoken with Trump, assuring him that his administration would collaborate with Trump's team “to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition.”
“On January 20, we’ll have a peaceful transfer of power here in America,” the sitting president affirmed.
In his remarks to staff, Biden emphasized that “it’s going to be OK” and highlighted their participation in a “truly historic presidency,” noting that the effects of their legislation will continue to resonate in the future.
“Together we’ve changed America for the better. Now we have 74 days to finish the term, our term. Let’s make every day count,” Biden declared.
He stressed that this election demonstrated the integrity of the US electoral system, which he described as honest, fair, transparent, and trustworthy, subtly addressing Republican criticisms of the 2020 elections that led to his unprecedented win against Trump.
Biden called on the winning Republicans to “bring down the temperature” and “see each other not as adversaries but as fellow Americans.” He has described Trump as a threat to democracy, and Harris has drawn comparisons between her rival and Adolf Hitler.
Biden praised Harris for her “great character” and acknowledged her commendable campaign, mentioning that he had reached out to her prior to her concession speech on Wednesday.
In July, Biden faced pressure to exit the race, allowing Harris to become the Democratic nominee without going through the primaries. She took over Biden’s campaign funds and gained popularity after the party convention.
Harris was selected as Biden’s running mate in 2020 as part of an agreement with prominent Democrats to secure backing for his nomination. Despite her own presidential campaign, she withdrew before the initial primaries due to limited funds and lack of support from the party base.
The Biden-Harris ticket garnered a historic 81 million votes in the 2020 election, surprising many with Trump’s defeat. This time around, the Harris-Walz ticket received nearly 68 million votes compared to Trump's 72.5 million.
