In response to the rising number of illegal crossings, the Pentagon is increasing the number of soldiers deployed at the Mexico border to assist Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents. This action follows President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the border, alongside his promise to confront “an invasion” of unauthorized entries into the United States.
“President Trump signed an executive order – 1,500 additional troops to the United States southern border. This comes off of his day-one action … to direct the Department of Defense to make homeland security a core mission of the agency,” reported White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday.
Currently, approximately 2,200 active-duty troops are stationed at the border as part of Joint Task Force-North, headquartered in El Paso, Texas. These soldiers are collaborating with the National Guard and CBP agents.
As noted by CNN, the duties of the troops mainly involve “mostly logistical and bureaucratic tasks,” such as data entry and monitoring.
Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses indicated that the Pentagon plans to send “helicopters with associated crews, and intelligence analysts to support increased detection and monitoring efforts.”
The Pentagon will also “provide military airlift to support DHS deportation flights of more than five thousand illegal aliens from the San Diego, California, and El Paso, Texas, sectors detained by Customs and Border Protection,” Salesses told reporters, adding, “This is just the beginning.”
Overall, reporting from The Washington Post on Wednesday suggested that Trump is preparing to deploy approximately 10,000 troops to the Mexico border, based on an internal CBP document.
Since taking office on Monday, Trump has expressed his determination to safeguard the nation from the “invasion” of illegal migrants. In an executive order issued shortly after his inauguration, he asserted that many undocumented migrants “present significant threats to national security and public safety” and are “committing vile and heinous acts against innocent Americans.”
On Monday, Trump declared a national emergency at the border and discontinued a CBP app intended to assist migrants in scheduling appointments at border crossings.
During Joe Biden’s presidency, the United States has experienced a surge in migrant numbers. Border agents recorded a record 2.8 million encounters with migrants in 2023, and over 1.5 million individuals were categorized as “gotaways” — those who evaded CBP detection — between fiscal years 2021 and 2023, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
