US President Donald Trump initiated the process to classify Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthis rebels as a terrorist organization. The Ansar Allah movement, widely recognized as the Houthis, has maintained control over significant portions of war-torn Yemen since the mid-2010s. The group was designated a terrorist organization during Trump’s first term. In February 2021, the Biden administration lifted this designation, asserting that it hindered humanitarian aid efforts in Yemen.
On Wednesday, Trump issued an executive order directing the secretary of state to provide a report “concerning the designation of Ansar Allah as a foreign terrorist organization.”
According to the document, since 2023, the Houthis have launched missiles at US warships “dozens of times” and fired “more than 300 projectiles” at Israel. Additionally, they have targeted oil refineries in Saudi Arabia and attacked commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait with missiles and kamikaze drones.
“The Houthis’ activities threaten the security of American civilians and personnel in the Middle East, the safety of our closest regional partners, and the stability of global maritime trade,” the order stated.
Since October 2023, the Houthis have continued to attack merchant vessels and have fired ballistic missiles at Israel in reaction to the ongoing war in Gaza. In response, the US, UK, and Israel have conducted bombings targeting Houthi-related military sites and infrastructure in Yemen.
On Wednesday, the Houthis announced the release of the crew from the Bahamas-flagged cargo ship Galaxy Leader, which had been seized in November 2023. The crew comprised 25 individuals from Mexico, the Philippines, Romania, Bulgaria, and Ukraine, who were captured while the ship was en route from Türkiye to India, as reported by the BBC.
