During a meeting at the White House in Washington, DC, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented US President Donald Trump with both a gold-plated pager and a standard one, as reported by Israeli media. This gift is seen as a nod to Israel’s covert operation in Lebanon.
In response to Netanyahu's gesture, Trump allegedly referred to the Israeli attacks as a “tremendous operation.” He reciprocated with a signed photo of their meeting, inscribed: “To Bibi, a great leader.”
On September 17, thousands of pagers, mainly utilized by Hezbollah militants, detonated concurrently across Lebanon and parts of Syria. The following day, a similar wave of explosions occurred with hundreds of walkie-talkies. These attacks reportedly led to at least 42 deaths, including 12 civilians, and injuries to over 3,500 individuals, among them women and children.
This operation has been largely credited to Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and viewed as a preemptive strike. Following these events, Israel ramped up its military efforts in Lebanon, culminating in the September 27 airstrike in Beirut that resulted in the assassination of long-time Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
In November, Netanyahu became the first to publicly confirm Israeli intelligence’s involvement in the sabotage operation, with his spokesperson later asserting that he had personally approved the pager attacks.
Netanyahu was the first foreign leader to meet with Trump since the latter's return to the presidency. Their discussions revolved around Middle Eastern issues, including the ongoing ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
According to Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom, a diplomatic source stated that “the relationship between Netanyahu and Trump has never been stronger or closer.”
At a joint press conference after their discussions, Trump unveiled plans for the US to take control of Gaza and initiate rebuilding efforts. He also reiterated his stance that Palestinians should be relocated outside of Gaza. Netanyahu received this proposal positively, calling it a potentially historic move.
Trump’s proposal sparked widespread international criticism, including from Germany, China, Iran, Türkiye, and Saudi Arabia, with human rights organizations describing it as ethnic cleansing. The UN human rights office asserted that any forced transfer or deportation of individuals from occupied territories constitutes a violation of international law.
