The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) has announced a ban on Israel's participation as a nation. This decision, revealed this week by the competition's governing body, comes in light of Israel's involvement in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The IOI is a globally recognized scientific competition for secondary school students, backed by UNESCO, the United Nations’ educational, scientific, and cultural agency.
Since its inception in 1989, the IOI has been an annual competitive programming contest where each member country is allowed to send a team of up to four students to compete over two days focusing on programming and algorithmic challenges.
On Tuesday, the IOI confirmed that Israel would not be able to compete as a nation starting in 2025, citing “its role” in the ongoing crisis. “The action means that beginning in 2025, Israel will not be recognized as a participating delegation at IOI, but four contestants from Israel may still participate under the IOI flag,” it stated on its website.
The decision was made in response to requests from members of the IOI community who urged the organization to take action concerning the humanitarian situation. “Over two thirds of the delegations voted in favor of this action,” the IOI's statement indicated.
Israel's military operations in Gaza, initiated after a deadly raid by Hamas in October, have reportedly resulted in over 41,000 fatalities, including nearly 16,500 children, according to Palestinian health sources. The Israeli government asserts that its military campaign aims to “eradicate” the Hamas militant organization, which is held responsible for the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis during the raids on October 7, 2023. In response, Israel has conducted extensive bombings of Gaza and continues its ground operations nearly a year after the conflict's escalation.
The Israeli Education Ministry expressed strong disapproval of the IOI's decision, as reported by the Jerusalem Post. “The Israeli youth computer science team will proudly carry the Israeli flag on its way to more victories and international achievements,” it stated. It remains uncertain whether Israeli contestants will participate in future IOI events under the proposed neutral flag.
Previously, the Israeli team engaged in this year's competition remotely, as the event took place in Egypt, and they did not attend due to “security” concerns, according to Ynet news. The report highlighted that the team's performance was “the best achievement ever for an Israeli team,” as they secured second place overall, surpassing the US team, with their top contestant finishing fourth behind competitors from China, Poland, and the United States.
