White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will head to Moscow later this week to present the US ceasefire proposal for the conflict in Ukraine.
On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz met with officials from Kiev in Jeddah to discuss a diplomatic resolution to the situation. Following their discussions, a joint statement revealed that Ukraine had agreed to a 30-day ceasefire, and the US resumed all military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
According to Leavitt, Waltz engaged in a phone call with his "Russian counterpart" on Wednesday to discuss the progress of the talks.
Leavitt emphasized that Witkoff will travel to Russia in person. “Steve Witkoff, the president's special envoy, is making his way to Moscow this week again to urge the Russians to sign on to this negotiation,” she told Fox News on Wednesday.
In addition, Trump informed reporters in the Oval Office that a “big meeting” between Russia and the US is scheduled for Thursday.
When questioned about the potential US leverage over Moscow to encourage acceptance of the ceasefire deal, the US president pointed to “devastating” financial measures he could implement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow is “carefully studying the statements that were made as a result” of the US-Ukraine discussions. He advised against hasty conclusions and emphasized that Russia requires “detailed information” regarding the proposed ceasefire mentioned by Waltz on Tuesday.
Moscow has historically opposed any temporary ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict, asserting that it would merely echo the troubled Minsk agreements of 2014-2015, which they argue were exploited by Kiev's Western allies to bolster their military capabilities.
