Russian star sets new all-time NHL record
Alexander Ovechkin has achieved a remarkable milestone in his NHL career, scoring his 895th goal and surpassing the legendary record previously held by Wayne Gretzky. This achievement, once deemed unapproachable, took place during a game on Sunday.

Playing for the Washington Capitals, Ovechkin found the net in the second period against the New York Islanders, marking a significant moment as it was the first time he had scored against fellow Russian goalie Ilya Sorokin. The game was momentarily paused to commemorate Ovechkin's historic accomplishment.

In the subsequent celebration, Ovechkin expressed his gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and fans, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in hockey. He stated, “Thank you so much, I love you so much,” adding that he would “not be standing here” without their support. In a lighthearted moment, he also thanked Sorokin for “letting [him] score.”

Ovechkin's achievement is celebrated widely, as reflected in a tweet from the NHL that proclaimed him the greatest goalscorer in NHL history.

“WE DID IT, BOYS, WE DID IT!” he exclaimed.

The 39-year-old Ovechkin, who has represented Russia as a three-time world champion, has dedicated his entire NHL career to the Capitals, leading them to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018. Gretzky, revered as the greatest hockey player ever, required 1,487 games to reach 894 goals, while Ovechkin accomplished this in just 1,486 games, quickly surpassing him in the following game.
