Reports from media outlets on Wednesday and Thursday indicate that Tehran is formulating a retaliatory action in response to last week’s Israeli bombardment of Iran, particularly ahead of the U.S. presidential election on November 5, according to unnamed sources.
This escalation in the Middle East follows a series of attacks by Israel on Iranian targets last Saturday. Those strikes were a response to a significant missile assault launched by Iran against Israel in early October, which was retaliation for the deaths of Hezbollah and Iranian commanders. The ongoing cycle of violence has seen both nations engage in reciprocal attacks multiple times this year.
Various U.S. news sources have suggested that Iran may act swiftly, potentially within days.
“The response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the aggression of the Zionist regime will be definitive and painful,” CNN reported on Wednesday, citing a senior figure involved in Iran’s discussions, though it did not specify the individual's nationality.
According to CNN’s source, while no precise timing was given for the anticipated attack, it is expected to happen “before the day of the US presidential election” on November 5. Additionally, at least three prominent Iranian officials expressed their intent to retaliate against the latest Israeli strikes in statements released Thursday, without indicating a specific timeline.
The commander-in-chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, vowed an “unimaginable answer” to the assaults in comments noted by the Tasnim news agency.
The deputy commander of the IRGC, Ali Fadavi, asserted that an Iranian response is “inevitable.”
“For over 40 years, we have never left any attack unanswered,” he remarked to the Lebanese news outlet Al Mayadeen on Thursday.
Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, a senior aide to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, similarly declared that Iran would deliver “a harsh and regretful response” to the Israeli actions.
Two Israeli sources informed Axios that intelligence suggests Iran is organizing an attack in the near future, possibly before the U.S. election.
However, sources cited by The New York Times indicated that the assault is more likely to occur after the election, to avoid potentially bolstering former President Donald Trump’s reelection prospects.
Khamenei has purportedly instructed preparations for a retaliatory strike, assessing that the damage inflicted by Israel was too significant to overlook, as reported by the newspaper, citing three officials.
Tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated since West Jerusalem initiated military operations in Gaza following Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel in October of the previous year, resulting in approximately 1,100 deaths and over 200 kidnappings. The ongoing Israeli operations in the enclave have resulted in more than 43,000 Palestinian fatalities, according to local authorities.
