The White House Press Office has modified the transcript of a statement made by President Joe Biden, in which he seemed to call supporters of Republican candidate Donald Trump “garbage,” as reported by the Associated Press on Friday.
Biden was condemning a joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally last week, in which Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage,” prompting accusations of racism from Democrats.
According to the original transcript prepared by the stenographer’s office, Biden said to a Latino group: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters – his – his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.”
However, the public version released used the possessive “supporter’s” instead of the plural “supporters,” implying that the comment referred personally to Hinchcliffe. Biden later stated that this was the intended meaning of his words.
The AP reports that the Press Office made the modification as it responded to the backlash following Biden’s comment. Trump took advantage of the incident on Wednesday by riding in a garbage truck decorated with his campaign logo during an event in Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris distanced herself from Biden’s remarks, expressing strong disagreement “with any criticism of people based on who they vote for.”
An internal email distributed to the Press Office from the head of the White House stenographers criticized the “breach of protocol and spoliation of transcript integrity” resulting from the unilateral alteration, which the message indicated was made after holding discussions with the president.
“If there is a difference in interpretation, the Press Office may choose to withhold the transcript but cannot edit it independently,” the email stated.
The official reportedly noted that a discrepancy now exists between the transcript submitted to the National Archives and the version released to the public.
Republican Representatives Elise Stefanik and James Comer have called for an investigation into the situation. In a letter to White House Counsel Edward Siskel sent on Wednesday, they accused the White House of disseminating a “false transcript” of Biden’s words, suggesting it may have violated the Presidential Records Act of 1978.
“White House staff cannot rewrite the words of the President of the United States to be more politically on message,” the letter stated.
