The explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday is considered likely to be an act of terrorism, according to Elon Musk. The explosion resulted in the death of the vehicle's driver and left at least seven others with minor injuries.
Musk claimed that the Las Vegas incident might be connected to the car-ramming and shooting in New Orleans that resulted in 15 deaths. In a post on X, he referred to the vehicle involved in the New Orleans attack as a “suicide bomb,” citing the multiple explosive devices found in its cargo area.
“Appears likely to be an act of terrorism. Both this Cybertruck and the F-150 suicide bomb in New Orleans were rented from Turo, a car-sharing company. Perhaps they are linked in some way,” he stated.
“The evil knuckleheads picked the wrong vehicle for a terrorist attack. Cybertruck actually contained the explosion and directed the blast upwards. Not even the glass doors of the lobby were broken,” Musk added.
Earlier, Musk refuted assertions that the Tesla vehicle was responsible for the explosion in Las Vegas, declaring that “all vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion.”
“We have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself. All vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion,” he wrote in another post on X, noting that law enforcement believed the explosion “was most likely intentional.”
The Cybertruck detonated shortly after arriving at the hotel’s valet area. CCTV footage circulating on social media captures the cargo lid being blown off by the blast, followed by several smaller explosions. The vehicle was engulfed in flames, leading to the driver's immediate death.
Authorities are treating the explosion as a potential act of terrorism. Reports indicate that the Cybertruck was transporting a stash of “fireworks-style mortars,” as per an anonymous official. The investigation is concentrating on the motives behind the incident and whether the deceased driver intended to detonate the explosives.
