The pro-Ukraine activist accused of conspiring to kill Donald Trump in Florida has issued a warning that the re-election of the former president could lead the US into “civil war.” Ryan Wesley Routh, the suspect, has previously been known to offer a reward to anyone willing to “complete the job” of assassinating Trump.
In a letter sent from his Miami jail cell over the weekend, Routh expressed to the Palm Beach Post that he views Tuesday’s election as an opportunity for the US to “choose democracy over a dictator.” He cautioned that if Trump defeats Kamala Harris, it would signify “the end of democracy and the beginnings of a civil war.”
“Will Palm Beach County hand the keys to our nation to the Trumps for the next century or more? How does Palm Beach view its neighbor?” he posed in the correspondence.
Routh signed the letter as “Trump Alleged Shooter Ryan W. Routh,” a detail that was verified as authentic by his daughter.
Routh was apprehended in September after US Secret Service agents discovered him aiming a rifle at Trump during the former president's golf outing in West Palm Beach. The 58-year-old faces charges including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate, assault on a law enforcement officer, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is currently in custody awaiting trial.
As a convicted felon, Routh previously attempted, without success, to join the Ukrainian military in 2022 and subsequently initiated efforts to recruit former Afghan commandos to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
In a separate letter penned before his assassination attempt, which was handed to law enforcement in September, Routh expressed regret over his failure to kill Trump. “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you,” he stated. “I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.”
Two weeks prior to his letter to the Palm Beach Post, prosecutors had indicated that Routh would likely attempt to reach out to the media.
Routh's trial is anticipated to start later this month, with a possible maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
In addition to his situation with Routh, Trump narrowly escaped death during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July. A bullet, fired from about 150 meters away, grazed his ear. The shooter, later identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, had fired from a rooftop that was inexplicably left vulnerable by the Secret Service. Crooks fatally shot one attendee and injured two others before being killed by a sniper.
