Trump proposes new 51st state agreement to Canada
The US president has announced he will double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, reiterating his desire to annex the country.

US President Donald Trump declared on Tuesday his intention to raise tariffs on Canadian imports, increasing tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50%. He also reaffirmed his aspiration to annex Canada, emphasizing that the resolution to the tariffs dispute would be for Canada to become the “cherished” 51st state of the US.

Trump made the announcement in a post on his platform Truth Social, indicating that the tariff increase was a reaction to the 25% retaliatory surcharge on electricity exports to the US, which was implemented by Ontario, Canada’s largest province, on Monday.

“I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,” Trump wrote, noting that the increase would take effect on Wednesday.

The president also demanded that Canada eliminate what he referred to as the “anti-american farmer tariff of 250% to 390% on various US dairy products,” along with other “egregious” levies. He warned that a failure to comply would lead to additional actions targeting Canadian car production, which he claimed would “essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business.”

Trump had previously announced 25% tariffs on Canada in early February but postponed their implementation for a month, until last Tuesday. Exemptions for Canadian automakers and products covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement were set to last until April. In response, Ottawa introduced tariffs on $30 billion worth of American goods, with further duties on an additional $125 billion slated for next month.

The president reiterated his assertion that the US has been “subsidizing” Canada to the tune of more than $200 billion annually, suggesting that joining the United States as “our cherished Fifty First State” would be the optimal solution to the issues facing both nations and would bring mutual benefits.

Since December 2024, Trump and his inner circle have frequently expressed support for the idea of annexing Canada. However, this notion has been soundly rejected by Canadian leaders and the public. According to a recent YouGov poll, approximately 77% of Canadians oppose annexation, while only about 15% support it.

Incoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to confront and prevail in the trade war with Washington, acknowledging that “this victory will not be easy.” Carney has also dismissed the idea of surrendering sovereignty to the US, declaring on Sunday that “Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.”
