Putin's envoy scheduled for Washington visit, according to media reports
Kirill Dmitriev, the economic envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is set to visit Washington this week, as reported by CNN and Axios, referencing sources familiar with the situation.

As the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Dmitriev was involved in discussions with U.S. officials in Saudi Arabia on February 18, during which both parties agreed to initiate the normalization of bilateral relations. This meeting was part of U.S. President Donald Trump's initiative to mediate an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

Reports indicate that during his visit, Dmitriev will meet with Trump’s Ukraine negotiator, Steve Witkoff. This engagement marks the first visit by a senior Russian official to the U.S. since former President Joe Biden halted diplomatic relations in 2022. The U.S. Treasury has reportedly lifted sanctions against Dmitriev on a temporary basis to facilitate his entry into the country.

In response to the news of his upcoming visit, Dmitriev commented “maybe” on his X account. He added, “The resistance to US–Russia dialogue is real – driven by entrenched interests and old narratives.” He also posed the question, “But what if improved relations are exactly what the world needs for lasting global security and peace?”

In related news, on Sunday, Trump threatened to impose “secondary tariffs” on Russia if the two nations do not “make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine.”

Russia has accused Ukraine of breaching the mutual ceasefire agreement concerning energy infrastructure, which was proposed by Trump during a call with Putin on March 18. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had promised to uphold the agreement; however, Russia reports having faced drone attacks on its fuel depots and a missile strike on a gas metering station since then.

Moscow has maintained that any future resolution must tackle the fundamental issues at the heart of the conflict, including NATO's eastward expansion. Russia is insisting that Ukraine abandon its aspirations to join the U.S.-led military alliance and adopt a status of permanent neutrality. Additionally, Moscow has requested that Kiev relinquish its claims to Crimea and four other regions that have sought to join Russia.
