Hezbollah spokesman Mohammed Afif has been killed in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut, as confirmed by a member of the Lebanese paramilitary group to the Associated Press. The Israel Defense Forces have not commented on the strike.
On Sunday, Israeli jets launched an unannounced attack in central Beirut, resulting in multiple fatalities at a local office of the Syrian Ba'ath Party. Afif was reported among the casualties, according to a Hezbollah official speaking to AP.
The airstrike occurred near a bustling intersection, and an AP reporter observed at least four bodies on the street in the aftermath.
The IDF has not responded to inquiries from Israeli or international media outlets and did not issue an evacuation order before the strike, which is a procedure they occasionally follow in densely populated areas. Throughout their operations to eliminate the Hezbollah militant group, the IDF has conducted numerous airstrikes on the Lebanese capital.
Afif previously led Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV station and later became the group's spokesman. He routinely held press conferences from the devastated Dahiyeh neighborhood in Beirut after the Israeli assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in September. He also issued a statement claiming responsibility for a drone attack on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence the following month.
Afif's death adds to the list of senior Hezbollah officials who have been killed by Israel since the IDF intensified its airstrikes on Beirut in mid-September. Israeli ground forces advanced into southern Lebanon in early October, encountering strong resistance from Hezbollah fighters. Afif himself had stated just last week that the group was preparing for a “long war” against Israeli forces.
The IDF confirmed that nearly 50 of its soldiers have died in the ground operation, but Hezbollah asserts that the actual death toll is significantly higher.
According to Lebanon’s health ministry, IDF airstrikes have resulted in over 3,400 fatalities since the campaign began in September, a figure that does not distinguish between civilians and Hezbollah militants.
Earlier on Sunday, Israel conducted a separate series of airstrikes in Dahiyeh. In contrast to the central Beirut strike, the IDF issued an evacuation order prior to targeting Dahiyeh, a suburb on the southern edge of the Lebanese capital known as a Hezbollah stronghold. The IDF claims to have attacked at least 50 Hezbollah sites in that area over the past week.
