On Monday, the Houthi movement, which governs much of Yemen, announced that it had successfully hit a target near Tel Aviv using a hypersonic ballistic missile. However, Israel reported that the missile was intercepted before it could enter its airspace and that there were no casualties as a result.
The Yemeni Shia faction has been blockading the Red Sea, launching missiles and drones towards Israel for months in an effort to counteract West Jerusalem’s military actions in Gaza.
During a televised statement on Monday, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree declared that a “military target” near Tel Aviv had been successfully engaged with a hypersonic missile, labeling the operation a success.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces reported that the missile fired from Yemen was intercepted prior to entering Israeli airspace. Air raid sirens were activated in Tel Aviv and surrounding areas due to concerns about potential injuries from falling debris.
According to the IDF, the remains of the missile landed in the West Bank, causing no injuries. However, the Israeli ambulance service reported that five individuals suffered minor injuries while seeking cover in Tel Aviv and neighboring locations, such as Petah Tikvah, Kfar Saba, Holon, and Em Hamoshavot.
Since November, the Houthis have launched a minimum of five drones and six ballistic missiles targeting Israel. Notably, a drone attack last week hit a building in the city of Yavne, resulting in significant property damage but no injuries. The IDF explained that this UAV was mistakenly categorized as non-threatening, leading to the absence of air raid sirens during the incident, as reported by Israeli media.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration is reportedly planning another military response to the missile strikes in Yemen, following previous airstrikes against the Houthis in July and September.
Local media have indicated that US and UK forces jointly targeted Houthi positions in Hodeidah province on Sunday.
Israel’s conflict with Hamas began after the group executed a series of attacks from Gaza on October 7 of the previous year. In retaliation, the Houthis have attacked Israeli vessels entering or leaving the Red Sea, subsequently broadening their focus to include US- and UK-affiliated ships, resulting in significant disruptions to global shipping activities.
