US carries out 'precision airstrike' on the capital of Yemen
The Pentagon has announced that American forces executed a precision airstrike on a “key command and control facility” allegedly run by Iran-backed rebels in Houthi-controlled Sanaa, Yemen.

According to a statement from US Central Command, the facility is believed to be a center for coordinating Houthi operations, which include assaults on US Navy warships and merchant vessels in the Southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

This operation underscores Washington’s “ongoing commitment to protect US and coalition personnel, regional partners, and international shipping,” as stated by CENTCOM.

The airstrike occurred amid rising tensions following recent missile and drone assaults by the Houthis on both Israel and commercial ships. Earlier on Monday, the Houthi movement asserted that it had launched a hypersonic ballistic missile towards Tel Aviv, which the Israeli Defense Forces reported was successfully intercepted, with no casualties resulting.

The Yemeni Shia group has been actively targeting Israeli vessels in the Red Sea, as well as expanding its focus to US and UK-linked ships, expressing “solidarity” with Palestinians during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

In recent developments, the US Navy reportedly thwarted a Houthi attack on commercial ships in the Gulf of Aden last week. CENTCOM noted that on December 9-10, two US destroyers, the USS Stockdale and USS O’Kane, effectively neutralized unmanned aerial systems and an anti-ship cruise missile, safeguarding civilian vessels and crews. Additionally, on November 13, US Navy vessels intercepted and neutralized Houthi drones and missiles while passing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

In response to Houthi aggressions, the US and its allies initiated Operation Prosperity Guardian last year. Last month, US military forces targeted Houthi positions in Yemen with airstrikes that aimed at weapons depots linked to attacks on ships off the coast. After December 15, the Houthi-operated Al-Masirah television reported fresh airstrikes from the US and British forces targeting Hodeidah province, although there was no immediate US comment on this claim. Hodeidah is significant, featuring an international airport and three critical ports, and it has frequently been a target of strikes by US and British forces.
