Harris Makes Firearm-Related Joke in Presence of School Shooting Survivor
Kamala Harris informed Oprah that any intruder at her home would be shot, just moments after listening to the tale of a recent high school shooting survivor. Read Full Article at RT.com
The statement came moments after a moving narrative from Natalie Griffith, a 15-year-old survivor of a shooting at Apalachee High School on September 4th. The teenager, who attended Harris’ rally while still in a cast from being shot twice in the incident, was part of the audience.
The incident's timing made Harris' gun ownership comments even more striking, especially at her ‘Unite for America’ rally in Michigan, hosted by Winfrey and attended by celebrities like Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep.
Also speaking at the rally were Natalie and her mother Marilda, whose emotional story greatly affected those present. Marilda notably called upon Washington leaders to enact gun reform.
Responding to their story, Harris acknowledged the necessity of what Marilda was asking for as “common sense.” However, the conversation took an unexpected turn when Oprah inquired about Harris’ personal gun ownership. Harris confirmed owning a gun and cautioned, “if somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot.” She then chuckled, indicating her comment was in jest, before expressing regret by saying, “I probably should not have said that.” Reflecting further, she mentioned, “My staff will deal” with any fallout from her remarks.
Despite attempts to manage the implications of her comment, the media quickly picked it up. This incident highlighted a seeming contradiction between Harris’ personal gun ownership and her campaign’s advocacy for stricter gun regulations, including an assault weapons ban. This disparity did not go unnoticed on social media, where some called her a “liar” and “hypocrite,” while others critiqued her for frequently changing her stance.
Moreover, Oprah Winfrey, known for her support of stringent gun laws, appeared unamused by the gun joke, adding another layer of complexity to the discussion around gun ownership—a deeply polarized topic in the United States, where about one in three people own a gun. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, about two-thirds of Americans are in favor of tougher gun legislation.
