Harris, Biden, and Supporters Target Key Areas in Labor Day Campaign Effort
The initiative aims to strengthen support among working-class voters.
Harris will head to Detroit before joining Biden in Pittsburgh for a campaign event, underscoring the president’s strong ties to unions in states like Pennsylvania. Her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, along with first lady Gwen Walz, will be in Milwaukee to participate in the city’s annual Laborfest. Additionally, second gentleman Doug Emhoff will attend a Labor Day event in Newport News, Virginia.
Surrogates, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Mitch Landrieu, Tom Perez, and others, are also being dispatched to key battleground states such as North Carolina, Nevada, and Georgia.
This extensive Labor Day travel reflects Harris’ commitment to securing labor support in crucial states as the election season unofficially kicks off and Americans begin to pay closer attention to the upcoming election. Her aim is to thwart former President Donald Trump’s efforts to win over working-class voters who could influence the election's outcome. Harris has communicated to union leaders her intention to advance Biden’s pro-union agenda, relying on the administration’s record that has fostered a strong relationship with the labor movement, a partnership that Biden played a pivotal role in building.
Biden’s participation in Labor Day events is indicative of his strategic role on the campaign trail in the coming months. The Harris campaign, along with his team, will position him in states where he appeals to older white voters, particularly those in states he won in 2020, such as Pennsylvania.
Walz, who has a background as a union member, was a favored choice among labor leaders during the vice-presidential selection process and is viewed as a valuable addition to the ticket that could strengthen support among white, working-class voters.
Like Biden, Walz demonstrated his solidarity with labor by joining striking auto workers on the picket line at the Stellantis parts distribution facility in Plymouth, Minnesota, last October. He also enacted one of the most substantial sets of worker-friendly policies in state history, enhancing protections for workers seeking to unionize.
