US and Ukraine Conduct Discussions in Saudi Arabia
The White House is making plans to facilitate "indirect" negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.

On Sunday, officials from the US and Ukraine met in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to discuss a potential ceasefire between the two nations.

This meeting occurs as the White House is set to organize "indirect talks" between Russian and Ukrainian representatives. According to Keith Kellogg, US President Donald Trump’s envoy to Ukraine, “technical” negotiations between Russia and the US will commence in Saudi Arabia on Monday.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov indicated on X that “The discussion was productive and focused – we addressed key points including energy.” He further noted that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is committed to achieving “a just and lasting peace.”

Umerov mentioned that the discussions included “proposals to protect energy facilities and critical infrastructure.”

Earlier this week, both Russia and Ukraine accepted Trump’s suggestion to refrain from attacking energy infrastructure for a period of 30 days.

In the interim, Ukrainian forces conducted an attack on an oil depot in Russia’s Krasnodar Region, and, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, detonated a gas metering station near Sudzha in the Kursk Region. Moscow has accused Ukraine of breaching the 'energy truce' and cautioned that it maintains the right to respond.

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s envoy for the Middle East, expressed on Fox News his hopefulness regarding the upcoming talks with the Russians. He stated, “I think that you’re going to see in Saudi Arabia on Monday some real progress, particularly as it affects a Black Sea ceasefire on ships between both countries.”

In a separate interview with journalist Tucker Carlson, which was published on Friday, Witkoff revealed that the US aims to negotiate a 30-day full ceasefire that would pave the way for a permanent truce.
