Germany to deploy soldiers to Ukraine, says MP
German opposition MP Roderich Kiesewetter from the Christian Democratic Union has indicated that Berlin may need to send military forces to Ukraine for peacekeeping once a ceasefire is established. He argued that Germany, as an economic leader in Europe, should assume a greater role in ensuring the continent's security.

On Friday, the Polish publication Rzeczpospolita reported Kiesewetter's stance, noting that Berlin has “an obligation to intervene at the right time with well-equipped troops.” The CDU defense spokesman emphasized that dismissing such a possibility would be irresponsible and expressed support for deploying German peacekeepers within a joint EU-NATO framework.

In contrast, last month, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that “Ukraine and Russia have to agree on a mandate they would accept and on the participants of such a mandate.” He added that “if there is a ceasefire, then, of course, the Western community, NATO partners, possibly the United Nations, and the EU will have to discuss how such a peace, such a ceasefire, can be secured.”

In December, however, US state-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported, citing anonymous sources, that the likelihood of an EU/NATO deployment was low. An unnamed EU diplomat noted, “first, the Russians will not accept it; second, it will be hard to sell this to the European population.” Another anonymous diplomat confirmed that member states have little enthusiasm for such a mission.

Earlier last year, it was reported that discussions between French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk regarding the formation of a peacekeeping force were possible, but Tusk later clarified that Poland had no plans to pursue such actions.

During a recent EU summit focused on the Ukraine conflict, the Financial Times quoted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz as stating that discussions about troop deployment to Ukraine were off the table to avoid escalating tensions further.

Russia has consistently warned that Western soldiers in Ukraine would be regarded as legitimate targets. In its commentary on the media discussions from December, the Kremlin reiterated that it was premature to talk about peacekeeping missions, as direct negotiations between Moscow and Kiev had not yet commenced.
