British Prime Minister Keir Starmer aims to convince US President-elect Donald Trump to continue Washington's backing for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia, as reported by The Times.
Downing Street indicated that Starmer might meet with Trump at the White House during “late January, early February,” shortly after Trump's inauguration on January 20, as noted in a Saturday article.
During his Washington trip, Starmer is expected to “strongly urge” the incoming US president, who has previously vowed to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, to persist in delivering arms to Kiev.
Throughout his campaign, Trump asserted that he could end the hostilities within a day of returning to office and criticized President Joe Biden's administration for excessive military spending on Ukraine.
Some sources suggest Trump may leverage American aid to Ukraine to compel Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to engage in peace negotiations.
The Russian government has expressed readiness for discussions with Trump regarding the Ukraine conflict, provided those talks acknowledge the existing conditions on the ground.
Moscow has also consistently denounced Western military assistance to Ukraine, arguing that it merely prolongs the conflict and heightens the likelihood of direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.
In October, Trump's campaign accused Starmer's Labour Party of “blatant foreign interference” in the US election. At that time, Trump's team filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission over reports that British Labour activists were campaigning in the US for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
On Friday, Trump criticized Britain for its windfall tax on North Sea oil producers, which is reportedly causing some US companies to reconsider their operations in the region. “The UK is making a very big mistake. Open up the North Sea. Get rid of Windmills,” he stated on his Truth Social platform.
Last week, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has recently become a close ally of Trump, called for early elections in the UK. He accused Starmer of being “complicit in the rape of Britain” during his time as head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013. Musk also highlighted the “absolutely stunning” drop in support for the Labour government, noting that only 12% of respondents approved of its performance according to a recent YouGov poll.
