This statement follows comments from French President Emmanuel Macron, who criticized Musk for allegedly interfering in EU affairs, claiming that Musk has interfered in elections across Europe, including the upcoming snap federal elections in Germany.
“Either the European Commission applies with the greatest firmness the laws that we have to protect our unique space, or it does not, and then it should think about giving the capacity to do so back to EU member states,” Barrot stated in an interview with France Inter radio, urging lawmakers to “wake up.”
When asked if the X platform could face a ban within the EU, the minister noted that the legislation to enable such a move "is laid out in our laws."
The foreign minister’s statements come ahead of a livestream event on X featuring Alice Weidel, co-leader of the right-wing AfD party, scheduled for Thursday, where Musk is expected to participate as a host. The European Commission commented on Monday that it would investigate whether this livestream breaches the bloc’s social media regulations.
Musk has previously stirred controversy in December by asserting on X that “only the AfD can save Germany.” This statement was followed by an op-ed in the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, where Musk defended the party against allegations of extremism and praised its economic policies.
His remarks have drawn further ire, especially after he publicly called for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to resign, labeling him an “incompetent fool” in the aftermath of a tragic attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg last month.
Moreover, Musk has been critical of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, accusing him of inadequately addressing the Pakistani grooming gang issue and overlooking the investigation of mass rape of underage girls during his tenure as head of the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013. He also urged the United States to intervene and “liberate” the British populace from what he termed their “tyrannical government.”
