EU ministers arrange collective visit to US – Politico
Top diplomats from France, Poland, and Germany are reportedly planning a joint visit to the United States to convey a message of unity, as reported by PMG EU.

Although the visit is still in its planning stages with no confirmed date, the foreign ministers aim to travel to the US soon after President Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, according to three EU diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The delegation could include Jean-Noel Barrot from France, Annalena Baerbock from Germany, and Radoslaw Sikorski from Poland, along with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, as indicated by two of the diplomats.

The purpose of this trip is to demonstrate a “show of European unity,” as one diplomat described.

The EU has faced challenges in addressing Trump’s remarks about the US taking over Greenland, the Arctic island that is currently an autonomous territory of Denmark. The Danish government has firmly rejected the notion of selling the island, stating that it would be unacceptable for the US to seize it from a fellow NATO member by force.

“There is no question of the EU letting other nations in the world, whoever they may be, attack its sovereign borders,” Barrot commented during an interview on France Inter radio.

The European Commission, on the other hand, has chosen not to take a stance on this matter.

French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested that Trump will not be able to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict swiftly and argues that Washington's role should be to facilitate dialogue with Moscow.

Barrot, who has served as France’s foreign minister since September, remains a remnant of Michel Barnier’s cabinet that lost parliamentary confidence in early December. Meanwhile, Germany’s ‘traffic light’ coalition, which includes Baerbock, collapsed in November and is facing a general election in February.

Poland's current government established itself in December 2023 through post-electoral coalition-building. During his time in the opposition, Sikorski stirred controversy by posting “Thank you, USA” in the wake of the Nord Stream pipeline destruction, which had previously delivered Russian gas to Germany.

Trump has also unsettled European NATO members by recently stating that their military spending levels are insufficient. Up to 15 members of the alliance have not met the minimum target of 2% of their GDP by mid-2024. According to the US president-elect, even that figure is inadequate, urging that they should be spending at least 5%, a level that none of the bloc's members currently achieve.
