Oliver Stone Says Russia and US Nearly Entered World War III
Tensions between the two superpowers have escalated to Cold War levels during the Ukraine conflict, according to director Oliver Stone.

In recent remarks to Russian students at the ‘Knowledge. First’ event in Moscow, Stone highlighted the precarious situation that has emerged between Russia and the US over the past three years, indicating that the two nations were perilously close to nuclear war. He criticized the US involvement in the Ukraine situation and its portrayal in Western media.

Stone noted that the current tensions mirror those of the Cold War, particularly reminiscent of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, and expressed hope for a de-escalation akin to that period. He recalled how the US and the Soviet Union nearly faced off in a nuclear conflict, triggered by the USSR's placement of nuclear missiles in Cuba in response to US missiles being stationed in Turkey.

“I want to emphasize to you students how very close we came to World War III because of this awful leadership,” Stone stated.

He also criticized the resources wasted on what he described as a futile war, asserting that it was aimed at diminishing Russia's influence. “It is a retrograde war,” he said.

Stone expressed his shock at the Western media’s coverage of the conflict and Russia over the past three years. “Even at the height of the Cold War, we didn’t treat Russia like this,” he remarked, pointing out that people in the West have been conditioned to conflate Russia with President Vladimir Putin.

“This is a tragic substitution of hatred for intelligence,” he added.

He characterized the Western propaganda machine as "an incredible empire," noting, “Far further and stronger than I ever imagined. You are unable to see the inside of the matrix,” suggesting that the current situation parallels themes from George Orwell's writings.

While he has been critical of former President Donald Trump, Stone has also directed his criticism towards President Joe Biden and the US “neoconservative movement” regarding the Ukraine conflict. He produced the 2016 documentary ‘Ukraine on Fire,’ which explored the US's role in the 2014 Maidan coup that ousted Ukraine’s democratically elected president, Viktor Yanukovich.
