Fire at Türkiye Ski Resort Results in 66 Fatalities
A devastating fire at a ski resort hotel in northwestern Turkey has claimed the lives of at least 66 individuals and left over 50 others injured, some of them critically, as reported by the country’s interior minister on Tuesday. The incident occurred early in the morning at the Grand Kartal Hotel located within the popular Kartalkaya ski resort in Bolu province.

Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that the fire ignited on the restaurant floor of the 12-story hotel around 3:30 AM, with firefighters taking 45 minutes to respond. The flames rapidly spread, exacerbated by the timber cladding of the building.

Eyewitnesses described the scene, noting thick black smoke enveloping the 161-room hotel within minutes, prompting guests and staff to flee in terror. At the time of the fire, the hotel was hosting 238 guests, many being families on holiday during a nationwide two-week school break.

According to information from Governor Abdulaziz Aydin’s office, firefighting efforts continued for hours, hindered by strong winds that made it difficult to contain the blaze. The hotel’s perilous location near a cliff complicated evacuation, leading some guests to jump from windows or use bed linens to escape, resulting in additional injuries. It was also reported that at least two individuals died after jumping from the building in panic.

Following the disaster, authorities have assigned six prosecutors to investigate the incident. They are looking into potential safety violations and assessing whether the hotel's fire prevention measures were adequately operational. Survivors have been taken to nearby hospitals for medical care, with several in critical condition.

In response to the tragedy, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the situation in Ankara, pledging that “all necessary steps will be taken to shed light on all aspects of the incident and to hold those responsible accountable.”
