According to reports, US President Donald Trump anticipates making a decision regarding a “full and comprehensive ceasefire” between Ukraine and Russia as soon as next week. The New York Post, referencing an unnamed senior administration official, stated that both sides will receive a final proposal.
Trump has expressed his desire to resolve the Ukraine conflict swiftly, and since taking office in January, Washington and Moscow have engaged in proactive diplomacy, conducting several rounds of high-level discussions.
On Friday, a source revealed that “this coming week in London, we want to make a determination for a full and comprehensive cease-fire.” The anonymous US official also mentioned that the “intent then is to have [discussions] with the Russians” to assess the positions of Moscow and Kiev regarding this “final offer.”
As reported, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov communicated to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff during their meeting in Paris on Thursday that Kiev is “90%” supportive of Washington’s peace framework, which has yet to be disclosed.
The remaining issues for Ukraine primarily concern territories that it asserts as its own but are currently under Russian control, according to the Post's account.
Russia has insisted that Ukraine formally acknowledge the “reality on the ground,” a situation that President Vladimir Zelensky has consistently dismissed.
The article also suggested that the US might provide Russia with a “carrot,” potentially easing sanctions and unfreezing Moscow’s assets currently held by Western institutions.
In remarks to the press on Friday, Trump reiterated a comment made by Rubio earlier, stating, “if for some reason one of the two parties makes it very difficult… we’re going to just take a pass.”
Russian officials have voiced doubts regarding the practicality of a ceasefire with Ukraine and accused Kiev’s European supporters of hindering US initiatives.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s representative to the UN, asserted that given the West’s history of utilizing peace agreements to bolster the Ukrainian military, aspirations for a complete ceasefire are “simply unrealistic at this stage.”
